How To Create Fix Version In Jira

How to plan a new version or sprint in Jira Cloud

Spreadsheet Issue Field Editor is an alternative to the list view in Jira Work Management that provides you with extensive capabilities for inline editing of Jira Cloud issues and collaborating on them with your team. Take advantage of spreadsheet issue editing for Jira issues and rapidly transform your project management processes.

Development of software products or projects is not possible without comprehensive planning. This is required to ensure that the team can implement the requested functionality on time with the currently available capacity. This way, you get a predictable timeline for project deliverables. Without planning, you will get a chaotic process without clear timelines and unexpected delivery.

You can use sprints or versions to plan your project scope depending on the software methodology you are using. If you are using Scrum, you can use one- or two-week sprints with the small deliverables every sprint. If you are using waterfall or Kanban, you can use versions as a way tо track milestones for shipping project deliverables.

Planning a new version in Jira Cloud

Planning a new version in Jira Cloud is quite easy. You just need to open the Backlog section and expand the list of versions.

Here click Create version and fill out details for a new version. Alternatively, you can go to the Releases section and create a new version there.

Now you are ready to plan versions. Go through the list of tasks and select the appropriate fix version in each task, and that's all. Tasks assigned to specific versions will get an additional label when you open them in the backlog view so that you can quickly find tasks that do not attribute to a particular version.

You can further go to the Releases page to track progress on the current version. Once the version has been tested and verified, you can release it, so it will be no longer available on the list in the Fix versions field.

Planning a new sprint in Jira Cloud

Planning a new sprint is also a simple task in Jira Cloud. The easiest way to plan a new sprint is to go to the Backlog section.

Click here Create sprint and now you can add tasks one by one into the sprint. Alternatively, you can drag the line to add a bulk of tasks into the sprint. This is the quickest way if your backlog is organized according to the ranking of issues, but it is not always so 🙂

You can also hold the Ctrl button, select multiple tasks and drag them onto the sprint. Three ways — the same result!

When ready click Start sprint and pick the start date and select the sprint duration. Well done!

Planning a new version or sprint at a new level

While reading through the post, you might have noticed that all the time you need to go through the list with backlog items and assign them to the necessary version or sprint. You need to drag the issue or open it and set the correct fix version, which is not very convenient when your sprint or version contains more than 50 tasks or you have a project backlog with thousands of tasks.

For such situations, you may want to assign tasks to versions or sprints in another way … for example, with Spreadsheet Issue Field Editor. You just need to create sprints and versions in advance; anyway, you need to do the same even if using the native functionality.

Load the list of backlog items and start selecting the sprint for each task.

For easier visual perception, you can group tasks by sprint. Once complete, go to the Backlog section and start the sprint.
The same approach for version planning, just go through the list of tasks with your teammates and assign tasks to appropriate versions.

Which approach to choose depends on your preferences. The easiest way is to try all of them and see which one better appeals to you.
